A huge crowd, mainly machomen, besieged the Cocoa Affairs Courts in Accra Friday at the second hearing of drug-related charges against the owner of Tudu Mighty Jets, Abubakar Nallah. Abubakar Nallah, otherwise known as Abu Sundonko, was arrested a fortnight ago together with nine other operatives of the Narcotics Control Board, and has been charged with importation and exportation of narcotic drugs. It was hectic at the court on Friday. Joy News’ Sammy Darko reported that well-built men invaded the courtroom and precincts, physically preventing journalists from covering the trial. The few police personnel at the court were as well overshadowed by the presence of the teeming supporters of Abu Sundonko, as they looked on helplessly while the machomen intimidated and physically prevented the media from being part of the court proceedings. Sammy Darko described the scene as chaotic and very threatening, adding that no journalist dared to reveal his or identity let alone display their cameras. “They (supporters) have reduced the police actually to begging. The police have been begging them… the Mighty Jets supporters are not allowing any journalist into the court premises, and a while ago a truce was called between them and the police that no journalist would be allowed to enter into the courtroom,” he narrated. Sundonko’s supporters accused journalists of playing a role in the arrest of their icon and making his case worse, Joy News’ Daniel Oduro, who was also at the trial, added, saying the supporters who had gone berserk were very hostile to the press. He expressed disappointment in the attitude of the security personnel there. “You risk being attacked by the supporters if they see you speaking on the phone or see you taking shots with your camera or phone. It has been very hostile. No TV cameras are here because they dare not try it, if you try it, you risk being lynched. It has not been really, really exciting covering [the trial].” Daniel Oduro said he spotted most players of Tudu Mighty Jets, as well as football administrators James Oyedezi, Alhaji Hearts and a host of personalities who thronged the court to solidarise with Abubakar Nallah.
