A 58-year-old cook with the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA), who was shot in the breast on July 15 this year during a joint police and military patrol operation at Mamprobi in Accra, says she has been neglected.
According to Madam Cecilia Amoah, since the incident, she has been neglected by both the police and the military while all her efforts to get justice have been futile, leaving her with no other option than to resort to the media for attention.
Narrating her story, Madam Amoah said on that fateful day at about 9pm, she had parked her car by the side of the road, near a roadblock mounted by a joint security patrol team, to buy something.
She said while she was buying her item, a taxi driver drove into the roadblock against orders by the security officers for him to stop.
She said the police allegedly fired shots at the taxi and a bullet hit her in the back with some pellets exiting through her right breast.
Madam Cecilia Amoah said her cry for help was responded to by onlookers who rushed her to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital where doctors attended to her.
She said since the incident, she has not been able to use her left arm because she still feels excruciating pain while her food business has collapsed as a result. She operated the canteen at the GHA.
She said doctors have warned that she needs further surgery or the consequences could be dire.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Rose Bio-Atinga, confirmed the incident but said the security agencies are finding ways to resolve the matter.
She explained that the police had accepted responsibility and had made efforts to pay an initial GHS600 for Madam Amoah’s medical bills.
She explained they were currently waiting for receipts from the victim to make the full payment of her bills as well as compensate her.
DCOP Bio-Atinga said the police are working with the Army to deal with the issue.
