An eleven year old boy has reported his father to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service for allegedly threatening to kill him. According to the boy (name and town withheld), he was engaged in a fight with a friend in the neighbourhood when his father came to the scene and started beating him up. The boy said without listening to how the fight came about, the father stepped on his belly several times with no pity, chased him with a “machete” and threatened to kill him. “He has done this to me several times and I am afraid he could kill me if nothing is done about it,” the boy stressed. The boy therefore covered a distance of eight kilometers to report his father's behaviour to the law enforcing agency. Meanwhile, a child right activist, Mr. Bright Appiah, told Joy News on Tuesday that the boy’s action shows how children are gradually beginning to know their rights. He was delighted that children are being informed about the various institutions established to ensure their safety and protect their rights. Mr. Bright Appiah said there are many children out there who have a lot of issues to talk about, but most of them do not know how or who to discuss these issues with. He said he believes this has set an open door for others to express themselves to the right institution.
