The Ghana Police Service has taken delivery of equipment worth eight million Euros from the Spanish Government. The presentation of the equipment forms part of the Second Ghana and Spain Financial Protocol, under which Spain granted Ghana a loan facility of 65 million Euros for the implementation of various projects and programmes in the country. The equipment include two emergency hospital equipment, five regular transfer ambulances; two corpse carrier trucks, two corpse carrier vans, one Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Others are 11 units extension stations for AFIS, 42 HF communication equipment, 11 units mobile communication and personnel big volume vehicles and 15 units generating plants and corresponding spare parts for each of the categories stated above. Presenting the equipment, the Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Olga Cabarga Gomez, said Spain and Ghana had a long standing bilateral relationship which was given a big boost with the granting of a loan facility to Ghana. She said on July 6, 2009, a Spanish loan was converted into a grant, out of which an amount of 7,990,700 Euros was dedicated to Tecnove S. L., a Spanish company for the supply of equipment to the Ghana Police Service. She expressed the hope that the presentation would go a long way to assist the police to fulfill its mandate to the people of Ghana. For his part, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, said the role of the police service in the maintenance of law and order and protection of life and property in the country was well acknowledged. He said the service, through the performance of its statutory duties, contributed immensely to the nurturing and sustenance of the country’s cherished democratic governance currently in practice. He said the provision of adequate resources, infrastructure and equipment would surely improve the service’s ability to continue to effectively fulfill its constitutional mandate and meet the expectation of the public.
