A statement issued in Accra on Thursday by Mrs Evelyn Anthony,Deputy Director, Media Liaison Section of Ministry of Information, said the celebration would be on the theme: “Tourism: Linking Cultures”.
It said this would bring to the fore the role of tourism in breaking down barriers across cultures and foster tolerance, respect and mutual understanding.
It will also provide an opportunity for Ghana to showcase her rich diverse culture and tourist attractions to both domestic and international tourists.
The statement said as part of the activities to commemorate the day, there would be tours to some tourist sites, folk music and dance competition, exhibition of artifacts, handicraft, fine art, local food bazaar and a grand durbar of chiefs and people.
World Tourism Day is a thematic event held annually on September 27 to foster awareness among the international community in the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values.
The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to highlight the contribution the tourism industry can make in attaining these goals.
The tourism sector contributed over $1.8 billion to the economy, an equivalent of 6.2 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) last year.
The sector realised $968,087,049 in revenue from January to June.
