The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South, Stephen Balado Manu has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to rescind its decision of not including the verification system in the register.According to Balado Manu, the EC’s intention to do biometric registration without verification ahead of the very crucial elections in 2012 creates doubts about the credibility of the process. The Civic Forum Initiative, a coalition of civil society groups have also raised concerns about the absence of verification in the biometric registration process.Spokesperson of the group, Emmanuel Bombande, who is the Executive Director of the West African Network for Peace building, underscored the need for EC to consider the call for verification in the biometric registration process by some political parties. The Electoral Commission which was recently cleared by an Accra Fast Track High Court to go on with the process after being sued by Intelligence Card Production Systems [ICPS] one of the companies whose tender for award of contract to work on the biometric process was rejected promised to take the concerns of the political parties into consideration. The EC says it would convey an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting for political party representatives to build consensus with all stake holders. But Hon. Balado Manu who was a panelist on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, warned of post election violence in 2012 if the issues raised by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are not quickly resolve. He noted that if verification is not done in the biometric registration process, the issue of multiple registration and voting which has characterized most elections in the country would still prevail. The Ahafo Ano South Member of Parliament observed that the EC must be seen to be neutral in an election where the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) wants to retain power and the opposition NPP is very hopeful of wining in 2012.The NPP man said Ghana must uphold its high standards in the conduct of free and fair elections in Africa since the International Community is looking at us especially in the 2012 General Elections. He implored the EC to work assiduously to ensure the peace and stability of the country is not marred by desire of some selfish politicians who want to clinch to power in 2012.Hon. Balado Manu opined that the NPP would not accept any election results in 2012 if verification is not done.
