A member of the National Democratic Congress from the Buem Constituency of the Volta Region, Chris Addy-Nayo has called on party faithful to prioritise the protection of the environment as part of its Social Democratic values.
Speaking at a meeting the supporters at Nkwanta South Constituency, Mr. Addy-Nayo lamented over the wanton destruction of the environment which he said is a threat to the country’s social and economic survival.
He noted, protecting the environment is a value that underpins the NDCs Social Democratic values.
The meeting was in response to the Kwesi Botchwey Report which recommended grass root engagements with party followers following the NDC’s 2016 electoral defeat.
Mr. Addy-Nayo, the NDC is embarking on a soul-searching effort to rebuild itself towards winning the trust of the electorate and help rebuild the country based on its Social Democratic credentials, reconnecting itself properly to social democratic roots.
Mr. Addy-Nayo stated that the devastation and havoc wrecked on the natural assets through illegal mining, illegal tree felling and illegal encroachment on forest reserves as well as overfishing of our coastal waters is a direct threat to the country’s ability to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development.
Mr. Addy-Nayo called on the people to protect their environment, forests and rivers given the potentials of economic value people of the region can benefit from a clean environment.
