The former Spokesperson for the erstwhile Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) Major [Rtd] Boakye-Gyan is the latest to vouch for the flag-bearer of the opposition NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo on drug allegations leveled against him. Boakye-Gyan who was Nana Akufo-Addo’s school mate at the University of Ghana, Legon said “I have never seen him (Akufo-Addo) do drugs, honestly”. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor who says he has known Nana Akufo-Addo for over forty years also waded into the controversy a fortnight ago, stating emphatically that he has never seen his successor taking any narcotic drugs. But the drug allegations against Nana Akufo-Addo appears far from subsiding after a publication in the AfricaWatch magazine’s September edition re-ignited public discourse on the issue. The magazine alleged that one Nana Poku Ofori Atta who served a jail term in Germany for money laundering is a cousin of Nana Akufo-Addo and contributed financially towards NPP’s campaign in the 2008 general elections. This has led to renewed calls especially from members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Nana Akufo-Addo to clear himself of the drug allegations or resign as the flag-bearer of the NPP. However, on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Boakye-Gyan said he believed the competence of an individual is more important than his past hence the need to judge Nana Akufo-Addo on what he can do for Ghana. He said even if Nana Akufo-Addo had done drugs, it would in no way affect his performance if voted as president given his credentials as an experienced politician. Boakye-Gyan cited former US President Bill Clinton as a clear example of a leader who admitted handling but never using narcotics and yet turned out as one of the greatest Presidents America ever had. The aspiring Member of Parliament for Jaman South constituency in the Brong Ahafo expressed worry at the way the issue of narcotics is gradually creeping into the country’s political discourse. He called on all those leveling the drug allegation against Nana Akufo-Addo to let ‘sleeping dogs lie’ and focus on dealing with issues ahead of the 2012 elections. “If the person (Nana Akufo-Addo) puts his hand on the chest and says I did not do it, let’s believe him and move on,” he counseled.
