A leading member of the Friends Of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings (FONKAR), Ernest Owusu Bempah has accused officers of the Ghana Police Service of blocking all routes to the ridge residence of former President Rawlings in an effort to scuttle a press conference to be held there. The press briefing, organised by a group calling itself National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth for Conviction of Principles (YWCP) was scheduled to begin at 10am Thursday at ground zero, land of ex-president Rawlings’ house which was razed down by fire some two-years ago. Mr Owusu Bempah said the Police claimed they had to block the road because President J.E.A Mills was on his way to commission the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office near the Ridge hospital but he believed that was just an excuse to stop them from holding the press briefing. According to him, the President could go ahead and commission his project while the group held its press briefing without any problem. He was speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Thursday. The police barricade has since been removed. A member of FONKAR, Mr Sidii Abubakar, told Myjoyonline.com's Ernest Dela Aglanu the barricade was probably removed because the media were asking questions. He said the police mounted their barricade right on the junction of Mr Rawlings' residence - the venue for the press conference. According to him, the action of the police could not be justified under any circumstance. In a press statement issued Wednesday, the YWCP said they “we will use the occasion to denounce and expose what we consider a planned and projected agenda by the Mills leadership to obliterate the image and relevance of Flt. Lt. J.J. Rawlings in the NDC.” They also promised to resist “the systematic destruction of our party and the betrayal of the NDC’s founding values and principles of Probity, Accountability and Social Justice” and address what they term the negative developments uncharacteristic of the NDC “but is causing apathy, division and despondency at the grassroots.”
