The Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) has set up a technical committee to wind up activities of the party now that it has merged with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), following negotiations between the two parties.The DFP recently ratified the agreement and the NDC is expected to do same at a later date. Thereafter the merger will be complete.Currently, the existence of the DFP will really end when the technical committee under the chairmanship of its General Secretary Mr. Bede Zeiding completes its work and the party informs the Electoral Commission accordingly while the NDC also takes steps to ratify their part of the agreement.The merger talks were set off by some meetings the leadership of the NDC and the DFP had in Tamale and later in Accra. Following those meetings, the two parties agreed to set up a committee to come out with a merger agreement, which was completed on October 5 and an agreement was signed.“As Prof. Mills and I agreed, we will let bygones be bygones and accordingly, we (DFP) advise our followers to go back to the NDC in the spirit of forgiveness and dedication to work hard to ensure success in the 2012 election,” Dr Obed Asamoah told the Daily Graphic.On what Mr Asiedu Nketia said at the DFP congress recently, Dr Asamoah said that “I understood that statement to mean that the NDC was now reformed and there was more internal democracy. So what made us leave no longer exist?” On what role he expects to play in the NDC, be said that “I am an organisation man and I hope I will have the opportunity to help build the party up. I do also hope that the NDC will set up machinery for the 2012 election and I hope that I can provide advice to that machinery.The agreement reached is fair and allows DFP members who wish to contest for positions in NDC to do so on certain provisions, he stated.According to Dr Asamaoh, if you are a DFP person going back to NDC, it is not practical to go looking for positions. You need to gather support before you make a bid for any position. I am not looking for any position. We are not coming to threaten anybody’s position. Our motivation is to work extra hard to assist in bringing good governance to the nation. Remember that I am a public spirited person and I love to serve. Our joining the NDC will reenergise and raise the moral of the NDC.” Giving a special message, he said, “We are sincere in what we are doing. With more interaction, the leadership and members of the NDC will appreciate the value of what we are doing. Don't let us underestimate the task ahead of us. Our return to the NDC fold will be beneficial to the NDC.
