The Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Amenowode, has denied recent allegations made by the chiefs of Dofor, Volo, Fodzoku and Torgome that he was part of a plot to site the capital of the newly created North Tongu District at Battor.
Their allegation, he said, came to him as a surprise since he did not choose the sitting of the district capital but was given the role to consult with them and send feedback to government which he did without any personal interest.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic Mr Amenowode said that he was contacted by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) that government had the intention of creating a new district for the area but did not want a problem similar to the one encountered during the creation of the Biakoye District, which delayed the takeoff of that district since the agitations over the sitting of its capital had to be settled in court.
Consequently, he said he was tasked to consult with the chiefs to determine the name of the district to be created as well as the sitting of its capital.
He went on to say that he arranged that meeting with the chiefs of the eight traditional areas, for the district under consideration This was at the conference room of the Regional Minister's residency where they discussed the name for the district and the sitting of its capital.
According to him, they were all unanimous on the choice of name, ‘North Tongu District’ but were divided on the sitting of its capital.
Mr Amenowode said when he realised the division, he did not want to be part of their decision. He and his entourage therefore left them and requested that another meeting be held later, after the chiefs had reached an agreement on the sitting of the capital.
When they were called back, he recounted that the spokesperson for the Mepe group said that they had chosen Battor as the capital. This was also re-echoed by the spokesperson for the Battors but the representatives of Volo, Dorfor, Torgorme and Fodzoku objected and said the capital should be Adidome-Dorfor.
“I told them I would take their decisions to government and asked if they would accept the government’s choice and they all agreed; that ended the meeting”, he said.
He also said that he did not send any report to the government but rather sent the minutes of the meeting to the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD); a copy which was shown to this reporter.
“I have no personal interest in where the capital of the district should be. My only interest was to engage them in consultation and send feedback to government which I did, and sent the minutes of that meeting to government so I know nothing about the allegations they are making”, he stressed.
