There was little progress at Monday’s highly anticipated arbitration between the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ghana Medical Association. The doctors turned up despite speculation they may boycott it because of a pending law suit filed by the coalition of NGOs in Health. The meeting led by the National Labour Commission did not agree on a settlement. Nevertheless, all those involved in the meeting were measured in their comments. Executive Secretary of Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, George Smith-Graham, though would not give much detail about the meeting, he told Joy News “the law is on the side of Ghana and Ghana will triumph”. When asked if they made any headway in resolving the impasse, Mr Smith-Graham only replied: “With God nothing is impossible.” National Labour Commission PRO, Mohammed Affum, seems to suggest the major achievement at the meeting was the setting of ground rules for the arbitration. “The Commission met the parties, the ground rules were set, and we have adjourned to Wednesday 12 noon... but the meeting was very fruitful.” Meanwhile, the 2008 flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Dr Edward Mahama has criticized government’s handling of the doctors’ grievances, saying the crisis could have been prevented. An earlier meeting of the Ghana Medical Association Council on Sunday to review the 17 day-old strike did not produce any result.
