Governance Think Tank, Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) has stated that it will take more than a biometric voters register plus a verification system to produce credible election results in the 2012 polls.
The Centre said it is therefore worrying that some political parties, especially the New Patriotic Party (NPP), are putting a lot of pressure on the Electoral Commission (EC) to implement the new technology.
The advice follows months of heated arguments between the parties, especially the opposition NPP, and the EC on the need to include a verification equipment at the point of voting.
Programmes Officer at the CDD, Paul Nana Kwabena Aborampa explained to Joy News that putting pressure on the EC to do a good job is fine but what will produce credible results is vigilance in the election processes.
“The vigilance of the political parties… international observers, local observers, education and sensitization [of electorates], the commitment of the security agencies, the media responsibilities; all these count,” he said.
He said verification is important but should not be the prerequisite for a credible voters register.
He advised Ghanaians to eschew the tendency of damning the credibility and competence of the EC, a highly respected body on the continent, just for political gains as that could be the launch pad for violence during elections.
He urged the parties to sit with the EC to iron out their differences, and further called on them to compliment the effort of the EC to complete the biometric registration exercise in the first quarter of 2012.
