The Managing Editor of the Al-Hajj newspaper, Alhaji Iddrisu Bature says the standing brawl between Fulani herdsmen and residents should be blamed on the failures of the national security to deal with the issue when it started. According to him the issue of the Agogo and Fulani herdsmen and their atrocities did not commence today, intimating that many successive governments were unable to resolve it, and worsening the crisis overtime. The Agogo residents have accused the Fulani herdsmen of terrorizing the lives of the inhabitants amidst threats to retaliate if nothing is done to curb the situation. The Agogo Residents Association threatened last month that it will not allow funerals in the area until their chiefs drive away the herdsmen from their land. There have been a series of demonstrations by the Agogo residents to press home their demand. Speaking to Asempa FM’s Ekosii-Sen Tuesday, Alhaji Bature noted that any attempt by the state to get the Fulanis ejected from the area will create more problems. “Fulanis are not different from any Ghanaian or human being so they must be treated within the confines of the laws of the country but not how we are doing it now,” he noted. “What has the National Security done to protect the citizens of Agogo and other areas. It is the state which is failing the people not the Fulanis because they also have rights” he stated. “The Fulani issues should be treated like a criminal matter not a special or an isolated issue. Why are some Ghanaians behaving as if the Fulani issues are special”? He quizzed. He took a swipe the National Security Coordinator and the Advisor for not meeting on the matter and finding an amicable solution to the problem but rather giving conflicting positions on the solution. ”listening to the national security capos, it looks as if there are no conscious efforts to combat the issue and it is sad.” The National Security Advisor Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo Mensah has said the Fulani herdsmen should not be driven away whereas the National Security Coordinator, Larry Gbevlo Lartey has given a two weeks ultimatum to the Fulanis to leave Agogo. He asserted that with the ECOWAS conventions, the Fulanis also have to be protected by the country. “Let’s tell the government and the nation that they have failed the people of Agogo” he said. Alhaji Iddrisu Bature hinted that he will not be surprised that Alhaji Grunsah and other Fulanis who will be ejected will also instigate their people to be up in arms against the Agogo residents.
