The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu-Nketia says the ruling party is against the electronic verification systems being advocated by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).He said an electronic verification mechanism among other things has its own disadvantages and if not implemented properly would plunge the country into chaos.The NPP has been on the neck on the Electoral Commission (EC) to include an electronic verification system in the biometric process as a means to check the identity of voters ahead of the 2012 general elections.The largest opposition party believes electronic verification is the surest way of checking double registration and voting for a more credible election results.The NPP flag bearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his party’s position to continue engaging the EC until a consensus is reached on the implementation of the verification process.But the EC has stressed that biometric verification was not a priority on the EC’s agenda for 2012.Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Johnson Asiedu Nketia called the bluff of the NPP's call for verification describing it as “blowing hot air” in their desperate attempt to unseat the NDC in 2012.He said the intention of the NPP is just to incite the public against government and the EC to court public sympathy.General Mosquito, as he is popularly called, opined that the government would not fund any process which has the tendency of disturbing the peace of the country.The NDC General Secretary noted that the introduction of the biometric registration is an indication of the Mills-led administration’s commitment to a free, fair and transparent elections in 2012.He observed, it would be erroneous for anyone to say that there cannot be a credible elections without verification in the country.Aseidu Nketia explained that the electronic verification system could disenfranchise people in the unlikely event of a power outage on voting day since it operates with electricity.The NDC scribe added that political parties could also take advantage of the process by recruiting their members to operate the system just to prevent members of the opposing party from voting by declaring them unqualified to vote.He said the more worrying development is the lack of education on how the system operates at a time where the country still records huge numbers of spoilt ballot papers during elections.Aseidu Nketia called for an improved security at the various polling stations across the country to ensure a peaceful elections in 2012.
