Member of Parliament for New Juabeng North Hackman Owusu Agyemang is blaming what he says is President John Mills’ fixation to commission projects for the congestion in the country’s prisons.
He was commenting on a submission by the Interior Minister Dr. Benjamin Kumbuor on the floor of Parliament that the Ankafu Prison is ready for occupation by prison inmates but is awaiting commissioning.
This, Hackman Owusu Agyemang maintained, is unacceptable and confirms perception that President John Mills is a commissioning–happy president.
“The honorable minister’s government is very fond of commissioning; even two classroom blocks is commissioned by the president. If the place is ready, there is congestion, why do you have to wait for commissioning? This one is being done by the president, the minister or who?
“…The commissioning cannot take precedence over the need to immediately relocate the prisoners. So when is the great commissioning going to be done and when are we going to move the people?"
He suggested that the prisoners be moved to the Ankafu prison whilst steps are taking to commission it later.
Dr. Kumbuor in his reaction said the committee working on the commissioning is almost done and will soon commission the new prison.
“…We are almost certain this will not be one of the one-bedroom commissioning but it will be a commissioning of an edifice that you would have initiated some years ago and you will be very proud of,” he stated.
