A deputy Chief of Staff has stated that the erstwhile New Patriotic Party must be held responsible for the difficulties by the current government in finding the killers of the overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Yakubu Andani. According to Alex Segbefia the first crucial 48 hours after the incident ought to have been used to find incriminating evidence which would then have been used to prosecute the killers but the government failed because its whole investigation was flawed. Speaking on MultiTV and Joy FM’s news analysis programme, Newsfile on Saturday the deputy Chief of Staff said the investigation was premised on a "war situation" instead of identifying mere criminals and prosecuting them. He was reacting to public agitations by some disgruntled members of the Andani Youth who have threatened the government to find and prosecute the killers of the Ya-Na or risk losing the next election. Even though there were two ethnic factions in the conflict situation, Alex Segbefia maintained only one of the factions - the Andanis - was under siege and suffered huge mortal losses. He said had the NPP got its “mindset” right and had approached the investigations the right way, there would not have been the need for a presidential commission to be set or for the NDC to make promises of finding the killers. He commiserated with the angry Andani Youth, adding however, the government is still committed to finding, arresting and prosecuting the killers of the Ya-Na. Sharing his sentiments on the Wuako Commission- the presidential commission set-up by Ex-President John Kufuor to investigate the killing- Segbefia said the witnesses; especially those from the Andani side had a lot of mistrust for the Commission and could not therefore relate properly with it. Several years later after the Commission’s work, some of the witnesses who testified on the commission have given several other testimonies in different courts, including the latest trial of 15 Abudus, but have not been able to get favorable verdicts. The 15 Abudus were all acquitted and discharged for lack of evidence.
