Except perhaps trading and farming, women have to contend with a glass ceiling in the professions and formal sector in Ghana. In politics, some women have made it to the very top in some countries but they are the exception. Many other women with desire to serve the public through politics have either lost out to massive challenges or have even given up the dream for fear of the challenges.Though it is said women constitute the largest voting segment of Ghana’s population, they hardly make up 10% of Ghana’s parliament. What are the true challenges and how do we set about resolving them. Do women necessarily have innate accountable leadership qualities and if so why are they not so popular on merit? Is it the case that active discrimination defeats merit? What about the intrusion of feminine attributes and the invitation to harassment that it appears to represent? Are age old social religious and cultural norms still dominant though there is no more debate about the rights of women in the workplace and hence leadership?Affirmative action appears unresponsive in Ghana. Does it imply reverse discrimination and how is it to be objectively applied within the subset of women? This is in respect of the cliché that women are their worst enemies and would not recommend a fellow woman if they can help it.Much can be said for meritocracy but the disadvantages of being a woman in the turbulence of national politics cannot be doubted either.Minority Caucus seeks to share your views about how our society ought to evolve in the face of obvious challenges to women’s advancement in politics.
1. How does it feel to be a woman in a male dominated political environment?
2. Should parties give quotas to women?
3. How do we determine or select deserving women?
