Some disqualified parliamentary hopefuls of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have stated emphatically that they are still contenders in the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the party. According to the candidates, they have not received official correspondence from the party leaderships on their alleged disqualified. Some reports in the dailies indicate that, aspirants in constituencies like Weija, Ablekuma North and Okaikoi-North, all in the Greater Accra, have been found ineligible to contest the race. Speaking on Multi TV’s Badwam, the regional chairman of the NDC, Joseph Ade Coker confirmed the report that some of the candidates have been disqualified, naming Carl Wilson of Weija and Andrew Okaikoi of Okaikoi-North. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii-sen Wednesday, one of the supposed disqualified aspirants, Carl Wilson noted that “nobody has told me that I am disqualified so I am in the race”. He stressed that he will be crowned victor in the upcoming primaries and not perturbed by a ‘phantom’ disqualification. The former boss of the Confiscated Vehicle Allocations Committee said he is focused on his campaign rather than “this diversionary tactics”. “I campaigned yesterday and today, so I am still in the race”. Mr. Carl Wilson bemoaned that after he had gone through vetting at the regional stage, the disqualification rumour came out and it’s now resurfacing. “Why only me? Whiles we are eight in number”. Another disqualified aspirant at the Okaikoi North constituency, Andrew Okaikoi also said “I am still in the race because I have not been notified by any of the executives”. He alleged that the supposed disqualification is being masterminded by a fellow contestant but noted he will not be perturbed. “look some people in the constituency do not want to accept a change but I can tell you there is an unquenchable fire of change burning in Okaikoi north today”. He noted that it is the national executives who can disqualify him from the race and not any individual or person. “I can tell you that come December 1, I will be the parliamentary candidate for Okaikoi-North, so I am not worried at all”. The husband of the former Minister of Information, Zita Sarbah Okaikoi, hinted the regional executives have given him a delegate list and wonders why there are still rumours of his disqualification. “I went through the regional and national vetting but had no indication that I will be disqualified but I am shocked at the turn of events”. In a related development, an aspirant of the Ablekuma North constituency, Ras Mubarak, who has also been hit by the disqualification rumours threatened legal suit if he is disqualified. He noted that it is painful to see a party which has come out from an acrimonious Presidential primary and still in the unity process behaving like that. He said the document making rounds that some persons have been disqualified is from a regional executive. He described the disqualification rumors as unnecessary distraction which is aimed at creating tension in the party.According to him, his campaign is focused and will not allow anything to disrupt it. Ras Mubarak alleged that he is being disqualified because he was critical of the Mills administration. “Yes I criticized Mills that was in the past so I think we should move as a party and foster unity among each other”. “NDC is a Democratic Party and believes in structures so I think due process should be used rather than communist inferior tactics. “Look the rules of the game will be abided by, or legal action will be taken” he opined.
