The Krontihene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Nana Oboaman Bofotia Bo-Amponsem, has called for the preservation of the Ghanaian culture to prevent the loss of national identity.
Nana Oboaman said a people without culture could be compared to “a giant tree without roots. When there is a storm, it is easily uprooted.”
He, therefore, warned against the indiscriminate adaptation of foreign cultures.
Nana Oboaman was speaking on the theme: “Chieftaincy, Culture and Tradition, Our Heritage and Identity” at the fifth anniversary celebration of his installation in Sunyani.
He said: “We as a nation seem to have come to the crossroads. We are confused and bombarded with foreign cultures. It is high time we did self analysis and repackaged our Ghanaian cultures to promote cultural tourism.
“Our culture is our identity and our heritage which we must preserve and pass on to future generations,” Nana Oboaman added.
He called on the various Centres for National Culture (CNC) to “aggressively bring our various cultures to the doorsteps of our people.”
Nana Oboaman further called on Ghanaians to resist any attempt to undermine the relevance of the chieftaincy institution in the country.
According to him, the chieftaincy institution was “seriously under threat by the forces of globalisation and technology.”
This, he said, was in spite of the “crucial roles” the institution of chieftaincy had “played in our development journey as a people and as a nation.
“The stools that we occupy are the embodiment of the spirit and soul of a people with a common ancestry. There is an emotional attachment to stools and their occupants. People will, therefore, do everything possible to resist any attempt to denigrate the very essence of their identity and heritage,” he added.
He called on the government to prop up the chieftaincy institution to enable it play its role effectively in society.
