The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Ransford Tetteh says the media fund captured in the 2012 budget as part of measures to equip the media is welcoming, progressive and a positive initiative by government.
Administering the 2012 annual budget in parliament on Wednesday, Finance Minister Kwabena Duffour stated that the government has created a media fund with a seed money of GHC 1 million to help build the capacity of media personnel in Ghana.
He noted that the fund will be supervised by a Board of Trustees which will be an autonomous body working like the scholarship secretariat and will be inaugurated this year.
Speaking on Asempa Fm’s current affairs programme on Thursday, Mr. Ransford Tetteh noted that government’s effort to support the media needs commendation.
“looking at the radio, TV and newspapers, their activities lack a lot of support and GHC 1 million media fund will help equip the media better” he asserted.
He stressed that the GJA will see to it that the fund is allocated equally for a lot of media personnel to benefit that is why it will be enshrined in the hands of board of trustees.
“We will be vigilante and ensure that it doesn’t become a clandestine activity for some selected group of people than to benefit all” he added.
