The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has declared war against landguards reported to be operating under the instruction of some chiefs in the Ashanti Region.
“As the occupant of the Golden Stool, I have the responsibility to protect all lands in Ashanti through the chiefs, using our cherished customs and traditions.
“I see no reason why some traditional rulers and some developers, should team up to introduce landguards which is alien to our customary and traditional practices to protect our lands in the region,” the Asantehene said, in a press statement released from the Manhyia Palace. This was after a visit by personnel of the Buffalo Unit of the Police Service to the palace at the weekend. The Asantehene asked people to report any chief in Asanteman using landguards to protect lands, to the Manhyia palace.“Any chief caught using landguards which will lead to intimidations and killings will be sanctioned according to custom,” Asantehene warned. He commended the Buffalo Unit for the good work they were doing to clamp down armed robbery.Otumfuo Osei Tutu lamented that though the armed robbers were staying with the law-abiding people in the various communities, they refused to give information about them to the police to deal with them.“What is painful about armed robbers is that they rob their victims of their money and other belongings and even kill them in the process,” he added. He asked the people to live up to their responsibility by providing the police with information to enable them to protect all, including market women and travellers who often fell victim to highway robberies.Deputy Superintendent of Police Adane Ameyaw, Commander of the Unit in the region, said they were doing all they could to reduce armed robbery cases adding, “Our success depends on the public who must be willing to give us the necessary information”.
