The Omanhene of Elmina, Nana Kojo Konduah VI, has expressed disquiet over comments attributed to the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, calling for a halt in illegal mining in the Benya Lagoon at Elmina in the Central Region where gold is said to have been discovered.
The Okyenhene is reported by the Daily Graphic of Thursday, December 1 to have condemned as a clear show of “the citizenry’s disregard for rule of law and the protection of the environment,” reports that scores of fortune seekers have since the beginning of the week been scavenging for gold at the Elmina beach.
But Nana Kojo Konduah, apparently displeased with the public condemnation by the Okyenhene, told Accra-based Hot FM that being his colleague, he would have expected the Okyenhene to reach him by phone and to give his good counsel. It should not have been via a public medium.
He told Ekuorba Gyasi on Hot FM’s morning show Thursday that he was aware the Okyenhene himself had burning issues on mining and the environment to deal with in his own backyard and wondered if he had accomplished that.
Nana Kojo Konduah said he had been receiving phone calls since the publication and he gets the impression the Okyenhene had ventured to deal with issues out of his jurisdiction.
