Parliament has approved the government’s budget statement Tuesday after days of vehement debate by members.
The leadership of both sides wrapped up the debate with their submissions on the floor shortly before approval.
Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu expressed concern about government’s commitment towards meeting the budgetary allocation of the Electoral Commission, Joy News’ Parliamentary correspondent Sammy Darko reported.
According to Mensah-Bonsu, the GHS50 million provided by government as part payment for the EC’s activities for the 2012 elections is not enough, more so, when the Commission needed more money to conduct a biometric and verification system in the 2012 election.
He said per the budget provided by the EC it is left with GHS 50 million more in order for the Commission to conduct a successful election and called on government to prioritize its activities and provide the necessary resources to the EC.
He also described as unconstitutional the creation of new districts by the local government ministry, arguing the power to create such districts rested only with the legislature.
The Majority Leader Cletus Avoka touted government’s achievements in his closing remarks.
He cited government’s plans to construct two new universities which was met with cheers from the majority and boos from the minority.
The minority concerns notwithstanding, the majority had their way and the budget was finally approved.
