A member of the communication team of the ruling NDC, Fred Agbenyo has called for the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood, to resign her position to make way for an independent investigation into a missing cocaine exhibit kept in the custody of the court.According to Agbenyo, the Chief Justice is an ally of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and cannot therefore be neutral to lead an investigation to unravel the mystery behind the cocaine-turned-sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) saga.An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday came to a standstill after 1,020 grams of cocaine kept as an exhibit in the custody of the courts in a case awaiting hearing was reported to have turned into baking soda.
The exhibit, a sample of which police say was certified as cocaine was tendered in evidence in court in the presence of court officials and parties. A defence counsel was said to have later requested for retesting, following which it was said to have turned into sodium bicarbonate. In 2007, under the erstwhile Kufuor regime, a similar incident occurred when cocaine exhibits locked up at the Police Headquarters also became cassava powder (Kokonte). The police insist the exhibit they handed over to the courts was cocaine and have only the courts to hold as suspects. The Judiciary, the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Board have petitioned the Chief Justice to investigate the matter. The CJ has already set up a committee to probe the incident. Before then though, the trail judge, Eric Kyei Baffour has acquitted the suspect, Nana Ama Martin, who had been standing trial since 2008 for unlawful possession of narcotics. But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Fred Agbenyo alleged that the Chief Justice is aiding and abetting the NPP to be at par with the NDC in the narcotic trade.“By the time NPP was leaving office, they succeeded in changing Ghana’s name from Gold Coast to 'cocaine coast'. That is the legacy we (NDC) inherited from the NPP”.He noted that the actions and inactions of Justice Georgina Wood especially on drug-related issues indicate that she has fallen for the grand agenda of the NPP - something which has brought the image of the judiciary into disrepute. To buttress his point, Fred Agbenyo said that the inability of the Chief Justice to deliver as head of the Georgina Wood Committee set up to investigate the 77 parcels of cocaine-turned-konkonte under the NPP makes her incompetent to handle the issue. The NDC youth activist claimed that the Chief Justice also played a vital role during the 2008 elections - working hand-in-hand with the NPP to enable them win the elections. He said justice would not be served if Justice Georgina Wood remains the Chief Justice in the country because anyone who raises an objection would be intimidated.Fred Agbenyo promised the Mills-led government's commitment to finding the culprits to face the full rigours of the law.
