Three books on Information Communication Technology (ICT) have been launched in Accra to enhance the teaching and learning of the subject in educational institutions.
Authored by an Information Technology Analyst, Mr Bright Siaw Afriyie, the books, “Concise ICT Fundamentals Volume 1 and 2’ and ‘Solution, Answers and Methodologies to Concise Fundamentals’, walk the user through chapters on basic ICT concepts, computer hardware and software, word processing, Internet and keyboarding and mouse review.
The “Concise ICT Fundamentals Volume l’ which is a 416-page book published by the Pacom Publishing Corporation of Korea is compiled into six chapters and each chapter subdivided into three sections, namely text, assignments and quizzes while the ‘Solution, Answers and Methodologies to Concise Fundamentals’ published by the same company contains solutions to assignments and quizzes and instructional methodologies.
The Concise ICT Fundamentals Volume 2 on the other hand, which was published by Sir Speedy Printing Press in the United States has 513 pages and is a reviewed version of volume 1.
Even though ICT is a compulsory and an examinable subject at the basic school level, logistical support to enhance the teaching and learning of the subject had been inadequate with schools in the rural communities particularly at a disadvantage.
In that regard, Mr Kwesi Assan-Brew, the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Communications, who launched the book on behalf of the minister, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, commended the author and said the books, would facilitate the effective teaching and learning of ICT in the country.
The Ministry of Communication, he stated, would encourage any effort geared towards the development, growth and use of ICT in Ghana.
“We appreciate efforts like this as ICT use is relatively new and we need textbooks that will make the teaching and learning of the subject easy,” he stated.
Mrs Fauziatu Salifu Sidii, the ICT Coordinator of the Ministry of Education, observed that ICT had become part and parcel of our daily lives and offered opportunities to further explore the country's development programmes.
The author, Mr Afriyie stated that he was inspired by the need to make ICT teaching and learning easy and effective in Ghana.
“Solid knowledge about fundamentals of computing has become indispensable in everyday life. That is where this textbook with solutions and instructional methodologies comes in; it serves a unique purpose by preparing you to uncover several confusing concepts that pose a big challenge to computer learners and users,” he stated.
