A former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Nii Ayikoi Otto, has told Citi News that he will be a good choice for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate position.
The issue of who will partner Nana Akufo-Addo for the 2012 elections has generated a lot of anxiety among members of the main opposition party.
Some Ga-Dangme personalities like Professor Felix Nii Lantei Odartey Wellington, Professor Ernest Aryeetey and Dr. Nii Okai Hammond have emerged as possible candidates.
But a group calling itself “Ga-Dangme Initiative” wants the NPP flagbearer to consider the former justice minister, who is a Ga-Dangme as his running mate.
Speaking to Citi News, the former Attorney General said he is well placed to be Nana Addo’s running mate for 2012. He, however, added that he would have nothing against Nana Addo if he decides to go with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2008 NPP running mate.
“Let us all remember that the prerogative of choosing a running mate lies solely with the presidential candidate,” he said. “If Nana thinks that in spite of the overwhelming support and he goes for Bawumia, I would have nothing against him. ”
There are indications that Nana Addo would maintain his 2008 running mate for the 2012 elections.
But Nii Otto stated that he is well placed to partner Nana Addo in 2012 due to his experience in Ghana’s politics, adding that he would welcome such an opportunity.
“I think I am well placed as far as I am concerned… Nana is somebody I have worked with so I don’t believe that it would be a bad choice. I have been an advisor to the Ga chiefs so I am well placed,” he stated.
