A Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwesi Jonah, has dismissed suggestions that the Electoral Commission’s strong room be relocated to the Police headquarters.A section of the public expressed concerns about the safety of the strong room following the viewing of an internationally acclaimed movie, An African Election, directed by Jarreth Merz. The movie filmed the actions in the strong room during the 2008 elections, an act the EC officials denied knowledge of.Some viewers at the first public showing of the movie condemned the EC for not ensuring the safety of the strong room and called for its relocation to the Police Headquarters where security is tighter. But Dr. Jonah said that is not necessary adding that measures must be put in place to ensure that some vital information do not come out from the strong room.“It is the EC that conducts elections, so if for any reason we think that some happenings in the strong room are not conducive for electoral peace, what we need to do is to ensure that there is adequate security at the premises of the EC to ensure that we deliver the truthful election we all strongly desire,” Dr. Jonah said.
