The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has bemoaned the level of filth engulfing Accra and blames it on attitudinal challenge. According to him, the local government ministry has been working assiduously to deal with the nation’s canker but has proven futile due to the bad attitude of some Ghanaians who deliberately litter the environment. The nation’s capital city which was initially known as one of cleanest cities in Africa cannot be given the same accolade due to filth swallowing it. Many residents in the nation’s capital have bemoaned how Accra is engulfed in filth and the environment is littered with impunity. Speaking on Asempa Fm’s current affairs programme Ekosii-Sen on Thursday, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo noted that until the people change their attitude, the nation cannot get rid of filth. “We need to change our attitude as a people because if there is a bin and someone decides to litter the environment, how can we progress as a nation?” He said one of the reasons why the nation is engulfed in filth is that people treat the service providers mandated to collect refuse with disrespect. “We cannot do without the service providers so I will plead with all of us to work hand in hand with the refuse collectors so that the nation will be free from filth.” The local government minister stressed that the government cannot be blamed for the filth in the country because people are not ready to do the right thing. "Nobody can blame the government and the local government ministry for the filth because we have done what we can and now left with the people to also help." He hinted that soon his outfit is going to embark on an exercise to scrutinize the activities of the service providers. “Soon we will embark on a nationwide tour to see to the work of refuse service providers so that those who are under-performing will be sacked and performers will be maintained”. He asserted that the local government Ministry has presented a number of waste collection equipments to the district assemblies so he believes the situation would be improved.
