Barring any last minute change in plan, the opposition NPP will give economist, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia a second chance to partner flag-bearer Nana Akufo-Addo for the 2012 elections.
A search team empanelled six months ago to assist the flag-bearer to choose a running mate has short-listed two persons for the top job – Dr. Bawumia and Ambrose Derry.
Joy News has learnt that Nana Akufo-Addo has chosen Dr. Bawumia ahead of three others said to be in the running for the veep slot. The National Executive Council of the party is scheduled to meet tomorrow to consider his choice.
Meanwhile, some party stalwarts are pushing for deputy Minority Leader, Ambrose Derry but Joy News’ sources say, the flag-bearer is determined to maintain his 2008 running mate.
The voice of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,
But Nana Akufo-Addo is convinced that Dr. Bawumia, formerly deputy governor of the bank of Ghana has the wherewithal to support him in the realization of his vision of a massive economic and industrial transformation of the country in which job creation would form a critical cornerstone.
According to Joy News sources, since Bawumia had been marketed already, it is only fair to give him a second chance.
However, those opposed to the choice of Bawumia argue that he somewhat fled to Zimbabwe to take up an appointment when he should have remained at home to support the party.
This argument has been rubbished by the revelation that his ADB appointment in Zimbabwe was with the blessing of former President John Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo himself. His resignation from the top job prompted questions as to whether he had foreknowledge of what awaits him on the political plane.
