Vice President, John Mahama has announced that the Takoradi airport would be relocated to a new site to meet modern trends due to the oil boom in the oil city.
He said the new airport is to make the region accessible not only by road but preferably by air, to meet foreigners who will be commuting to the region for business.
According to him, the other regions will also see new airports and improved infrastructure to boost development.
John Mahama made these statements at the commissioning of an ultra modern rescue and fire fighting facility for the Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday.
Vice President John Mahama said the facelift the airport is currently receiving is just the beginning of the many other developments government will soon embark on, at other airports in the country.
Transport Minister Collins Dauda expressed Government displeasure about what he described as the unfair fares charged by foreign airlines.
He said this is one major factor limiting the full potential benefits to be enjoyed from Ghana’s growing aviation industry.
Mr. Dauda said the exorbitant fares airlines charge make foreign travel appear to be the preserve of only the rich.
Collins Dauda called on air transport operators to immediately consider a review of their fares.
