A doctor at the Shekhinah clinic in Gurugu in Northern Region has been honoured with the U.S. Embassy’s Martin Luther King Award for peace and social justice.
Dr. David Fuseini Abdulai’s award is in recognition for his selfless and tireless services to the poor and vulnerable in the society.
Joy News’ Jefferson Sackey who was present at the honouring ceremony said Dr. Abdulai’s efforts dates back 25 years ago when he set up the Shekhina Clinic which is 60 kilometers from Tamale.
It was during the harsh days of cash-and-carry when people died merely because they had no cash to pay for health service.
According to Dr. Abdulai he could not withstand the gory sight and the effects this policy had on people who came to the hospitals for healthcare and so “I opted out asking that I didn’t want any salary from the government or any paid institution.”
He said he tested the faith of God and survived his first surgery in a rural clinic on a mentally ill patient.
His second operation was under a mango tree and on a beggar who had a tumor right on her nose. That too was highly successful.
“Based on that, I thought I could trust God absolutely and unconditionally to start this work,” he opined.
