Electricity tariffs are expected to go up by the end of the year as the energy situation improves.Mr. Kwame Pianim, the chairman of the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), has disclosed that government would remove subsidies on electricity by the end of the year to make way for the entry of the private sector in power generation.Mr. Pianim was speaking to Joy News on Tuesday. He said even though he is not very sure of the extent of increase, he thinks the difference would be an upward adjustment of about 20%.He told Joy News that last year when government wanted to adjust the price upwards the cost was shifted to industry, but this time round to achieve full cost recovery for the electricity sector, the cost would be passed on to the consumer.Meanwhile, the operation of emergency plants at Tema is expected to boost the energy supply needs of the country and hopefully end the black outs.It has been exactly one year today, August 28, when the Volta River Authority (VRA), announced the nationwide power outages.
