The Ghana Football Association says it is in talks with striker Asamoah Gyan to return to the Black Stars after the player announced he was quitting the national team.
Asamoah is saddened by the heaps of verbal abuse he has suffered personally since he failed to convert a penalty against African Champions Zambia in the 2012 African Cup of Nations semi-final match.
Zambia won the match one-nil and went on to beat Cote d’Ivoire in the final to win their first ever diadem.
Ghanaian fans have not spared Asamoah for the miss, and have also recalled his penalty miss against Uruguay at the World Cup in South Africa that should have seen the Black Stars in a historic semi-final berth.
But the insults and chastising have not been limited to the person of Asamoah, according to FA spokesperson Ibrahim Sannie Darra who prefers to correct that Asamoah only announced a temporary withdrawal from the Stars rather than quitting, the players family have also taken a share of the insults.
A statement by the Ghana FA said “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received a letter from striker Asamoah Gyan announcing his decision to take a temporary break from the Black Stars.
“Mr. Gyan is frustrated over the verbal abuse he has received since playing for the country at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
“The GFA is in talks with Mr. Gyan to urge him to reconsider his decision.”
While some fans welcomed his decision, others have however, urged the player to be apologetic over the penalty miss and think through his decision since he has a lot of playing days in his career.
