Newly appointed Eastern Region Minister, Victor Smith has dismissed assertions his new post is to facilitate his campaign and subsequent election as a Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North.He told Joy News however he is yet to receive a full brief from President John Mills over his new post.Mr Smith who is Ghana's Ambassador to the Czech Republic won the Abuakwa North parliamentary primary of the National Democratic Congress last year and has begun campaigning to wrest the seat being held by the NPP.Critics say he was named Tuesday's cabinet reshuffle to provide him enough leverage for the battle ahead.But Victor Smith dismissed such an assertion, saying “I don’ think so. I don’t think that is the reason for appointing me."He told Joy News’ Paa Kwesi Asare his appointment came as a pleasant surprise.Asked if he was excited with his new appointment, the yet to be Eastern Region Minister afforded a brief but hearty laugh saying, “We need to do what we have to do to get a second term.”According to him, the president had early on said he would use him to help the government, saying, if being the political head in the Eastern Region is the task the president wants him to undertake, he would do so to the best of his ability.He said he brings to the table “sustainable development to the area.”With the appointment of Victor Smith, the substantive Eastern Region Minister Appiah Kubi has been re-designated to the Office of the President as a minister of state.In Tuesday's reshuffle", Volta Regional Minister Joseph Amenoworde and Greater Accra minister, Nii Armah Ashietey were replaced by Ford Kamel and Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo respectively.
