Once again, Facebook has caused another Ghana Premier League player problems with his club.
Hearts supporters have been ranting about midfielder Uriah Asante's recent post on the network.
His crime, according to them, was that he wished the coach of title rivals Maxwell Konadu well in their coming game on Wednesday. Konadu had posted a message on his status which Asante responded: “I pray you win.”
Hearts fans did not take it lightly, with some threatening the mercurial player not to attend training. “How can a Hearts player wine and dine with the enemy?”, said the chairman of Hearts' powerful Chapter ‘O’ supporters group.
Speaking to Angel FM in Kumasi, the chairman of Chapter 'O' also said: “We (supporters) are telling him not to step onto the training grounds again because he has shown clearly his heart is not with us. We will inform management accordingly because this shameful act will not be tolerated.”
Uriah Asante tells SuperSport.com that he did not mean any harm.
Early on Ex-Mighty Jets’ captain Winfred Dormon and Aduana Stars’ Gabby Opoku Ware exchanged opinions on Facebook following contentious decisions by ref Pat Kyeremateng in November. Winfred Dormon vented his spleen on his page after the game with Aduana Stars defender Gabriel Opoku Ware, retorting by asking Dormon to, basically, shut up.
Social networks and sport
Psychologists have mentioned that social networking allows sports people to “bask in reflected glory and pain”, in other words, to celebrate successes and grieve about failure. But the debate is whether there should be a line for what they can say. Should social networking be regulated among Ghana Premier League players and officials?
