A member of the Ghana National U-17 World Cup winning team is the latest star to grace the fastest growing sport in Ghana at the moment; Beach Soccer!
The rapidly improving beach soccer premier and division 1 leagues have captured the imagination of communities dotted along the country's vast but untapped coastal belt.
Kofi Nimo, who was adjudged the second best defender at the 1991 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Italy, has agreed a deal to coach struggling East Legon Sharks.
The combative former defender was thrilled by the passion, skills and tempo of beach soccer players and expressed his sentiments about the developing sport saying ''these are very exciting times''
“What I have seen here is really very nice, since I started playing football this is my first time taking part in this game, it is very interesting.”
Nimo was also part of the U-20 side that won silver at the 1993 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Australia with the likes of Sammy Kufuor and Nii Odartey Lamptey.
The maiden Ghana beach soccer league which ends in May 2012, kicked off in October 2011 with ten teams sponsored by Cal Bank and another ten teams in division 1 sponsored by Clementia Contacto of South Africa.
The association has confirmed it will submit a full report to the GFA at the end of the league to firm up a partnership that will see Ghana gain entry to participate in Caf and Fifa beach soccer events.
