JOY Sports is leading efforts to institute a sports fund to support retired sports men and women who are struggling for survival. This is a response to suggestions made by sports enthusiasts on last Saturday’s edition of the JOY Sports Link which featured ex-Black Stars players, Bashiru Gambo and Shittu Muda who became blind five years ago partly due to his inability to raise funds to treat glaucoma. Shittu Muda played for Great Olympics and while Gambo played for Hearts of Oak in the local league and admitted to poor planning and failure to project into the future while they played for fame in the 60’s and 70’s.Shittu Muda now lives in Saabon Zongo, a Muslim community near Abbossey Okai a suburb of Accra and depends on friends to survive. Bashiru Gambo on the other hand lives in slightly better conditions even though he doesn’t undertake any economic activity.Lawyer and Journalist Egbert Fabile led the suggestion to establish a sports fund to assist these former stars. He pledged a 500 Ghana Cedi amount to start the fund which prompted an impressive reaction with many others public with people calling to support the fund.“The GFA should make it clear for clubs that are associated with the body to have a pension scheme for their players”. He told JOY Sports.A fund will soon be launched to solicit for funds to end the plight of these retired national stars.
