Junior doctors at Kolre Bu are threatening a sit-down strike if authorities fail to address the poor security situation there which they blame for the death of their colleague over the weekend.
27-year old Desmond Kabbah was discovered naked on his bed with stab wounds, and bits of the skin on his leg peeled.
Hospital authorities say they have improved the security situation and are working closely with the police to unravel the mysterious death of the junior doctor.
The doctors however say they are yet to feel the intensification in security.
The doctors, in a petition to the hospital’s administration are demanding at least significant improvement in the next 24 hours.
Spokesperson for the junior doctors, Dr. Vincent Ganu who read the petition, expressed disappointment that 24 hours after the body of Desmond was found, the hospital authorities had not taken any serious steps towards guaranteeing their security.
He said the housemasters wanted to see “Good and adequate source of lighting will be provided in the house officers' flats and its surroundings (that is, pathways or roads that lead to and from the flats.
“24 hour patrol team (made of policemen and the Korle-Bu security men), which would patrol the flats and its environs consistently, especially at night” and “Beef up in security at the flats and evidence of at least an able bodied security man at flats that formally did not have any form of security.”
Elizabeth Bruce, Director of Pharmacy who received the petition, assured the doctors that their demands will be complied with.
She promised to immediately forward the petition to the appropriate quarters.
Joy News’ Jefferson Sackey has been there to independently assess the security situation and confirms not much has changed.
Director of Police Operations, Patrick Timbilla, who was at the hospital today, counseled the doctors to make security a shared responsibility.
He advised the doctors against inviting unknown persons into the hospital’s enclave.
