The Gbi Traditional Council says it will not extend its 48-hour ultimatum given to the Muslim youth of Hohoe to return regalia stolen from the Togbe Gaabusu Palace when they attacked and vandalised the palace.
The President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV has been talking to the Gbi Traditional Council headed by the Togbe Gaabusu to consider its 48-hour ultimatum it issued to Muslims to return the regalia.
But his appeals have been ignored.
According to the spokesperson for the Hohoe Traditional Council, Togbe Agyemang V, the stolen regalia would be returned within the time given if the Muslims want a peaceful coexistence.
He added that they have been assured by Togbe Afede XIV that the materials would be returned.
Togbe Agyemang V maintained that it was too early to review the ultimatum which was issued on only Wednesday.
The spokesperson for the Muslim Community in Hohoe, Alhaji Anas Dauda said they were in no position to meet the ultimatum which elapses on Friday.
He added the Muslim Community was counting on Togbe Afede XIV to prevail on the Gbi Traditional Council to soften their stance so that an extensive search would be conducted to retrieve whatever that was taken from Togbe Gaabusu’s palace.
Alhaji Dauda said that in the event that the community is not able to retrieve the stolen regalia, they would meet with the Gbi Traditional Council to make alternative arrangements.
The clashes at Hohoe have left thousands of residents displaced creating a dire humanitarian situation. The Muslims have fled the town fearing further reprisal attacks by the indigenes of the town.
Several properties belonging to both sides of the divide have been destroyed by rampaging youths.
A dawn to dusk curfew has been imposed on the Municipality in an effort to calm escalating tensions in the Hohoe Municipality.
