Reports reaching Adom FM indicate that a bus belonging to a mining company got stuck on the bridge spanning the Pra River at Twifo Praso in the Central Region on Monday.
The bridge is the main one linking communities in the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira area. According to witnesses, a plank on the bridge which has been described as rickety suddenly broke and drove up the engine of the bus, causing it to stop abruptly and blocking traffic from both sides of the bridge.
On board the bus were about 60 workers of the Akyempim Gold Mining Company, Wassa Akyempim, who were being conveyed to work.
Witnesses at the scene included the former DCE for the area, Samuel Agyeibie-Kesse who were trying to help in the rescue efforts.
Last week, Adom FM reported that commercial drivers in Twifo Praso had threatened to embark on a demonstration to protest the poor state of the bridge and to demand repairs. But the District Chief Executive for the area, Foster Joseph Andoh maintained there was no cause for alarm.
Tweneboah Kodua, a reporter with Arise FM, who spoke on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday June 25, said commuters had complained several times over the last few months about the nature of the bridge but the authorities had turned a blind eye.
However, Hon Elizabeth Amoa-Tetteh, MP for Twifo Atimokwaa was unhappy with Adom FM’s reportage of the issue, accusing the station of not investigating the matter before reporting.
According to her no such incident had taken place or if it had it was being exaggerated.
But drivers and citizens have challenged their MP, who is also a deputy Minister for Education, to leave her seat in Accra and visit the constituency to know the real situation on the ground.
They have also threatened to demonstrate against the MP and the District Chief Executive.
