The National Accreditation Board (NAB) has hinted that private universities which persistently breach admission requirements could have their licenses withdrawn.
The warning follows a directive to the Methodist University College in Accra to suspend fresh admissions with immediate effect for failing to withdraw over 1,400 unqualified students. A couple of months ago, the Central University College was also ordered to withdraw about a thousand students.
While the basic entry requirement for admission of regular students is credit passes in six subjects, some private universities admit students on condition they will better their grades while others accept professional certificates like Diploma in Business Studies, DBS.
The latest development has raised concerns about lapses in the Accreditation Board’s operations, exploitation and abuse of students.
The Executive Secretary of NAB, Kwame Dattey admits the constraints but says mentor institutions could also be held liable.
“…At least, one must have C6…in three core subjects and three elective subjects,” he stressed.
