The Adomi Bridge which has been under pressure from overuse, will see rehabilitation works next year.
Once the works begin, the bridge will be closed to traffic for a period of one year.
Director of Bridges at the Ghana Highways Authority, Owusu Sekyere Antwi warns the Adomi Bridge will collapse if the current situation, where vehicles violate the 20 tons weight limit continue to use the bridge, persists.
According to Mr. Owusu Sekyere Antwi, Parliament has given approval for a loan facility from the Austrian government for the rehabilitation of the bridge.
He further stated that the rehabilitation which should have started this year was deferred to early 2013 due to some unforeseen delays.
At the moment other alternative routes are being finalized, such as the Ho-Adidome-Sogakope road as well as a ferry to be provided at Senchi for motorists to cross the Volta River.
He said that works on the alternative routes would be completed before the bridge is finally closed to vehicular traffic.
According to Owusu Sekyere, officials who are found to have connived with drivers of trucks which exceed the prescribed weight would be dealt with.
