A former transport officer at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has appealed to the Inspector General of Police to rescind his decision to withdraw police officers from the highways.
Atta Boafo said withdrawing police personnel from the highways could plunge the country into insecurity and increased road accidents.
His advice comes on the heels of the National Road Safety Commission warning that at least, close to two thousand lives may be lost through road accidents, if urgent steps are not taken to tackle the menace.
Statistics indicate that about six hundred people lost their lives in the first quarter of this year.
Mr. Boafo was worried that the decision had come at a time when the services of the police are needed most on the roads, as efforts were being doubled to bring down road fatalities.
The police are also needed to check smuggling of ammunitions into the country as elections 2012 nears.
Mr. Boafo believed the decision may have been taken in a haste, as he claimed road safety industry players were working tirelessly to bring down road accident fatality cases.
The development, he believed had given undisciplined drivers a field day to operate without recourse to road traffic regulations.
Mr. Atta Boafo who is NPP parliamentary candidate for Fomena has demanded that the decision should be reversed.
