Joy FM, in collaboration with Vodafone Ghana has constructed an ultra modern library at Asofan in the Ga West Municipality, Accra
The 50-seater capacity library project, which is a collaboration between Vodafone Ghana Foundation and Joy FM is projected at generating interest in the general public to read a book a month and also to provide an intervention to promote child literacy in schools.
Every month, the Super Morning Show hosts a reading clinic at a chosen school anywhere in the country and assists children improve on their vocabulary, pronunciation etc.
Additional library projects will be commissioned in Kumasi, Wa and Ho.
The primary objective of the project is to construct fifteen libraries over a three-year period across the country. This encourages collaboration and shared ownership by residents in building and operating new libraries/learning centers at a central location where children will have access to educational resources during and after school hours.
The premises of the libraries will also be used to provide basic training on drug abuse, sex , etc. for the children. This phase will be realized in partnership with the Ghana Library Board, Ghana Education Service, corporate sponsors, donor agencies amongst others.
Mr. Emmanuel Ababioh, a class four teacher at the Asofan M.A Cluster of schools told Myjoyonline.com, the commissioning of the facility is a dream come true and at the same time a fulfillment of a much expected aspiration.
Top officials of the two corporate bodies witnessed the event.
According to Mr. Ababioh the project will promote teaching and learning in the school.
The Deputy Education Minister Mrs Elizabeth Amoah-Tetteh commended the initiative by Joy FM, adding "reading is the cornerstone of all education programs and it must start from a very early age."
She said children cannot progress in their education if they cannot read properly, they cannot communicate properly and it will ultimately affect their self-confidence.
She also commended Vodafone Ghana Foundation for heeding the call of Joy FM to make a difference in communities.
