The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has reacted swiftly to concerns raised by striking teachers in seventeen basic schools protesting the invasion of their campuses by cattle with the erection of fence wall project to provide security to begin in earnest. Metro Chief Executive, Samuel Sarpong announced the affected schools would be fenced with the contractor expected to move to site this Friday. It follows conclusion of construction agreements between project contractors and city authorities. Widespread cattle invasion of the campuses has forced teachers in 17 basic within the cluster to boycott classes for fear of their lives and that of over 2700 pupils. Their action, backed by the Ghana National Assocuiation of Teachers (GNAT), was provoked by cattle attacks on the head teacher of Yaa Asantewaa Metropolitan Assembly basic School which left him seriously injured. According to the teachers, some social miscreants have turned the campuses into abodes of drug peddling and armed robbers due to the absence of a fence wall. Metro Chief Executive, Samuel Sarpong however is hopeful the fence wall project will address the plight of the teachers and pupils and also facilitate teaching and learning in the schools. He has appealed to teachers to return to the classrooms as the contractor starts work. The Asem Cluster of schools is also surrounded by a number of container shops where all manner of trading activities take place. Mr. Sarpong says their presence will not affect the fencing project since evacuation arrangements have been reached with the over 150-members of the Asem Boys Petty Traders Association. Chairman of the Association, Kwame Bamfo says members of the group will back the KMA to succeed. Meanwhile, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has detailed police officers to the cluster as an interim measure to provide security during schools hours. But the teachers are however yet to resume classes
