It’s easy to guess why sitting presidents refuse to take part in such debates. Of course, their policies and decisions will be questioned and they certainly will need justifiable and solid proofs to convince the electorates to maintain them. Also, it is anticipated they will have to deal with hostile audience at the venue.
It’s really not an easy task for a sitting president for such an occasion. However, let’s not deny the fact that this platform could be used by the President to elaborate more on government policies and even expose the ignorance of other presidential candidates. A sitting president has the advantage of inner information and can dispel notions and perceptions through such a platform.
For president Mills not to participate merely because no sitting president in the 4th republic had participated in such a programme is a serious blunder. It’s rather because of this that some of us wish he could take part to set that record and standard for others to follow.
Definitely, this IEA programme cannot be said to be the ultimate platform for these presidential candidates to persuade the electorates but then it’s an opportunity to reach out to some independent minded persons and should not be underrated.
I think we should begin to look out for bold leaders who can question and challenge the status quo. I really feel sad that my President will really miss this opportunity which to me is the real “unprecedented” occasion.
