One of the last two remaining survivors of the recent premix fuel blast at Brewure near Axim in the Nzema East district has passed away. A family source told Adomonline.com Kwame Anane, 19 died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital from the extensive burns he sustained in the Friday June 22 blast which has so far claimed 20 lives. The explosion was believed to have been caused by a generator which was being used to provide power for the distribution of pre-mix due to power outage. Witnesses say an exposed cable burst into flame, leading to the explosion. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Morning Showing on Monday, Kweku Nichol, Chairman of National Premix Committee, said following the blast, key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Premix Committee are putting measures in place to construct standard fuel discharge points with the appropriate safety measures. As well, District Assemblies, and officers of the Ghana National Fire Service have been encouraged to educate the fuel landing committees in their districts about the dangers of mishandling the flammable liquid. Mr Nichol however disagreed with suggestions that the victims should be compensated, arguing that the deceased were going about their normal commercial activities and it was up to them to insure their lives, not government. Reports from Adom FM’s reporters in James Town, Kormantse, Sekondi and other fishing towns and villages showed a worrying absence of appropriate safety measures at the various landing sites. Our reporters observed many of the fuel storage tanks in the open, subject to the elements. It would be recalled that Adom 106.3 FM, Ghana’s number one radio station recently launched an appeal to help raise money for the family of the survivors to defray their mounting medical bills, an average of Ghc 500 (five million old cedis) is required per day.
