The Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic and Economic Governance (IDEG) Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey has proposed that presidential aspirants must submit themselves to rigorous medical examination.
Dr. Akwetey’s call comes in the wake of the sudden demise of the President J.E.A Mills who was reported to be suffering from throat cancer although no official statement from government has been issued to that effect.
The Executive Director of IDEG told Joy FM that individuals seeking to be president must as a matter of requirement, assess their state of health and see whether they could cope with the high demand of the office they are seeking.
Dr. Akwetey added that political parties when vetting their presidential hopefuls mus,t include some form of a medical procedure which should be non-negotiable.
He added that, when that is done, parties should be able to disqualify aspirants whose health conditions could not match the demands of the office of the presidency.
He added that it behooves on the political parties in disqualifying candidates with adverse health conditions to keep the particular diagnosis of the disqualified candidate confidential.
He noted that the medical examination could also be extended to people seeking to be ministers of state as well as other high office.
