A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo is cautioning President John Dramani Mahama against selecting a Vice-president with presidential ambitions.
The President is expected to send a candidate for Parliamentary approval to occupy the vacant post of Vice President of the fourth Republic of the Ghana.
Several names have popped up in the media with Dr Kwesi Botwey, Mr Kwesi Amissah-Arthur and Samuel Ofosu Ampofo appearing to be the front runners for the vacant job.
Ransford Gyampo, who was speaking on Election Headquarters on Joy FM Tuesday, advised that considering the limited time frame and the challenges imposed on the party by the death of John Evans Atta Mills, he should appoint someone who will help him prosecute the Better Ghana Agenda spearheaded by the late President.
According to him, “You don’t need a real party-party person for this position. He [John Mahama] needs somebody who will be a bit technocrat and would steer the affairs of the nation while he is out there campaigning and making himself more popular to the people.”
The Political Science lecturer counseled the President to “look for somebody who he can really work with, he should look for somebody who has no Presidential ambition,” and somebody who will not work to undermine him.
Pollster Ben Ephson speaking on the issue also said John Mahama “needs to get somebody who will add value in terms of votes to his name…someone who will help him run the country.”
He said considering the time constraints facing the party, the person he selects as Vice President will be the same person he will submit as his running mate for the 2012 elections.
“The person he will be picking now will be the same person he has to go with…by the end of September President Mahama will have to submit the name of his running mate in the form he will submitting to the Electoral Commission.”
